St. Alexius Hosts Brain Event
The “Brain Train” rolled through the state capitol grounds today, asking the community to climb on board.
St. Alexius Medical Center Hosted the Brain Train awareness walk and event to educate the community about brain health, disorders and the prevention of disease and injuries. Doctors say less than 1 in 5 Americans can identify the warning symptoms of a stroke.
“One person in USA suffers a stroke every 45 seconds, and if you live in North Dakota, every two hours someone suffers a stroke so it is quite common, an unfortunately North Dakotans are stoic and not coming in to seek medical attention timely. They end up with either death or disability. It’s the leading cause of disability in the USA,” explained Dr. Shiraz Hyder.
Warning signs for stroke include sudden onset of numbness or weakness in a limb, a change in vision or speech, dizziness, poor balance or headache. Doctors say to seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Stroke Awareness Event
Get on Board the Brain Train.
Today St. Alexius hosted an event to raise awareness for brain disorders and prevention of brain injury. Every two hours someone in North Dakota suffers from a stroke. But Dr. Shiraz Hyder says most people can’t identify even one stroke symptom. He says it’s important for the community to be more aware and understand how to help those victims.
(Dr. Shiraz Hyder, St. Alexius) “We take good care of patients in the hospitals and the clinics but we want to go beyond hospitals and clinics. Its community involvement that is so important. We want to create a stronger support network for these diseases.”
The event has 46 different booths offering hands-on education about the brain. People get the chance to test their reaction time, and see how much of an affect alcohol can have. Dr. Hyder says it’s important to learn how you can protect yourself from injury.
(Dr. Shiraz Hyder, St. Alexius) “It’s all geared toward giving you more information that could someday save your self or a loved one.”
The five warning signs of a stroke include the sudden on-set of numbness on one side of your body, dizziness or loss of balance, blurred vision, slurring of speech and a severe headache.
