Skin Biopsies - Center for Family Medicine Mandan

What is it?
Skin biopsies take a sample of tissue to be examined by a pathologist.

Why do I need it?
Biopsies are done to identify unknown skin spots. They can diagnose skin cancers or unusual rashes.

How is it done?
The doctor will clean your skin with a sterile wipe and numb the skin with a small injection. A small piece of skin is removed using a scalpel or a small circular tube called a punch. Depending on the size of the sample, you may need a stitch to close the wound.
