Tympanometry - Center for Family Medicine Mandan

What is it?
A tympanogram measures the movement of the eardrum or tympanic membrane. It also provides information on the condition of the middle ear and conduction between the bones in the inner ear.

Why do I need it?
Your doctor may order a tympanogram to evaluate for ear infections, hearing loss or fluid in the middle ear. In children, it is useful to determine whether ear infections have completely resolved.

How is it done?
A small probe that looks similar to an ear thermometer is placed in the entrance to the ear canal. You will hear a sound as the pressure changes within the ear. It is a painless test that takes less than a minute. Results are immediately available
