Today’s labor and delivery nurses need to keep their fetal heart monitoring skills up to date. The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) can train your staff in fetal heart rate monitoring.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requires that staff demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate to their assigned responsibilities, which involves more than on-the-job training. JCAHO also requires documentation of those skills by a qualified professional. AWHONN’s Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices course provides information and hands-on experience. As part of AWHONN’s course, participants must pass skills and written tests to receive continuing education credit.
The Course
Purpose
To promote integration of knowledge and skills essential to nursing assessment, promotion, and evaluation of fetal safety during labor.
Description
This course focuses on applying essential fetal heart rate monitoring theory and skills in intrapartum nursing practice. The course is presented in two days.
• Day one, participants analyze case studies and use a physiologic-based approach to interpret fetal monitoring data.
• Day two, the skills session offers demonstration, practice and testing of skill in auscultation, Leopold’s Maneuvers, insertion and placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and fetal spiral electrode, interpretation of tracings, identification of nursing interventions, and communication and documentation.
• During the skills session, participants benefit from interactive instruction provided through a 1:6 teacher-to-student ratio.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the participant should be able to:
• Analyze fetal heart patterns, uterine activity, and their implications for fetal well-being.
• Discuss indicated clinical interventions and related maternal-fetal physiology.
• Effectively communicate verbal and written data about patient status.
• Describe the roles and responsibilities of healthcare providers in the use of fetal heart monitoring in intrapartum care.
• Demonstrate the psychomotor skills used in FHM.
Expected Level of Learner
The course builds on the knowledge and skills of experienced nurses.
It is designed for clinicians who have completed a basic or foundations FHM course and who utilize FHM in the intrapartum setting.

Prior to the Course:
• Read the Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices textbook (Fourth Edition) concentrating on those areas that are new or more difficult for you.
• Read how to do skill stations.
• Do the sample case studies and tests.
• Practice auscultation with a stethoscope on real patients in your clinical setting and counting fetal heart rate with the audio sound on your fetal monitor and a second-hand wristwatch. Bring a second-hand watch to Day 2 of the class.
• Practice Leopold’s Maneuvers.
