St. Alexius Welcomes Child of the God’s Child Project
St. Alexius opened with open arms Carlitos Hermerejildo Chuy Monroy, a 4-year-old Guatemalan boy, who was recently taken in by The God’s Child project. Carlitos was brought to Bismarck by Patrick Atkinson, founder/executive director of The God’s Child Project, to be treated for gunshot injuries he received when his family was savagely massacred in his village on July 4, 2000.
Little Carlitos witnessed the brutal murders of his father, mother (who was 8 1/2 months pregnant, his 6-year-old sister and an uncle. Carlitos and his 2-year-old brother, Gustavo, survived the attack; but have gunshot injuries. Their tragic story touched the hearts of many.
Dr. Kevin Mickelson, St. Alexius Emergency & Trauma Center physician, serves as the volunteer medical director for The God’s Child Project. He worked with others to arrange for Carlitos to receive an evaluation and treatment from Dr. Lewis Cunningham, Mid Dakota Clinic. Carlitos underwent surgery at St. Alexius and will be returning to Guatemala to be adopted by his extended family.
Anyone wishing to make a contribution to a special fund for Carlitos (travel, legal expenses, etc.) can make checks to: The God’s Child Project, Box 1573, Bismarck, ND 58502-1573.
