When a stroke takes place, there is a brief window of opportunity
in which to save areas of injured brain. To minimize disability,
it is
critical that stroke victims are evaluated and treated
quickly.
St. Alexius Medical Center is one of few hospitals in the region
to
have responded to this challenge with a primary stroke center
staffed with a multidisciplinary team of stroke experts who
provide
24-hour rapid response. We strive to reduce death and
disability
and improve the overall quality of care for people
afflicted by stroke.
Stroke care starts in the Emergency & Trauma Center and continues
through inpatient hospitalization and rehabilitation. Our leading
edge intensive care unit and radiology facility ensure the highest
standard
of care and the most accurate diagnostic techniques.
The skilled and experienced medical team at St. Alexius, including
neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians and specially
trained nurses, have assembled a rapid response program geared
toward fast
and accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment. Emergency
personnel in the Level II Trauma Center are attuned to
the needs
of stroke patients and follow rapid response protocols.
The Stroke
Center’s
comprehensive level of care extends beyond hospitalization as
specialists provide stroke prevention education, extended
rehabilitation care, support groups and follow-up care.
