Things to Keep in Mind When Swimming on Hot Days

Going for a swim is a great way to cool down on a hot day but there are some things you might want to keep in mind before diving in.

Dr. Ryan Clauson says you should hydrate more than normal when spending a lot of time swimming at the pool.

He says this is especially important for elderly people or children because they underestimate how dehydrated they can get so quickly. He also says that you might want to avoid jumping into freezing cold water as a way to cool down when you are over-heated.

“There is some emerging research out there that jumping into a cold pool can precipitate abnormal heart and people that are at risk with heart problems can precipitate adverse events. So I think it’s really important especially for kids to pay attention to the temperature of the water as well as the adults,” Dr. Ryan Clauson, CHI St. Alexius Health Medical Plaza – Mandan.

Clauson says it’s important to find a balance between cooling off in the water and just taking a break from the sun.
