St. Alexius' Radiology Services have expanded dramatically in the past several years. The radiology services offered include digital x-rays, nuclear medicine, CT scanning, women's imaging, ultrasound and MRI. In addition, CT cardiac angiography was recently added to the radiology services. We also offer PET scans on a weekly basis with a mobile unit.
Radiology utilizes state-of-the-art equipment, like the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) called iSite. This system allows digital images to be viewed instantaneously by physicians throughout the medical center. Our dictation system allows rapid turnaround of reports.
Radiology Services uses certified radiology technologists who have received specialized education in the areas of patient care, principles of radiation exposure, radiographic positioning and radiation protection. Our outpatient hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays, but we are staffed 24 hours a day for inpatient and emergency services.
In addition to diagnostic radiology services, radiology includes a relatively new nursing field, radiology imaging nursing. Nurses perform specialized nursing duties such as administering IV sedation, care of critical patients from ICU and ER, routinely starting peripheral IV's, infusaports and teaching patients, families and radiology staff. There is an accreditation program offered for this area of expertise in nursing.
