Please report to Admitting 15 minutes before your scheduled exam time.
PREP: Nothing to eat 4 hours before pill administration.
PURPOSE: Treatment of hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease, Plummer’s disease, or toxic nodule.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The technologist will give a detailed explanation of the examination when you arrive. Specific radiation safety instructions need to be discussed. You will be given a pill of radioactive iodine to swallow.
TIME FRAME: 30 minutes.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS: Minimal to no side effects from the radioactive isotope. Possible sore throat.
