When a stroke takes place, there is a brief window of opportunity in which to save areas of injured brain. To minimize disability, it is critical that stroke victims are evaluated and treated quickly.
St. Alexius Medical Center has responded to this challenge by earning distinction as a certified Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission staffed with a multidisciplinary team of stroke experts who provide 24-hour rapid response. This designation is earned after undergoing an on-site evaluation and demonstrating compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care. This achievement recognizes St. Alexius' commitment to providing safe, effective and timely care of the highest quality and value to significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients and the community.

The skilled and experienced medical team at St. Alexius, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians and specially trained nurses, have assembled a rapid response program geared toward fast and accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment.
Emergency personnel in the Level II Trauma Center are attuned to the needs of stroke patients and follow rapid response protocols. The Stroke Center's comprehensive level of care extends beyond hospitalization as specialists provide stroke prevention education, extended rehabilitation care, support groups and follow-up care.
