Lymphedema

Lymphedema is swelling caused by slowed or blocked movement of fluid through the lymphatic system, which is an important part of your immune and circulatory systems. This blockage prevents the lymph fluid from draining well. As the fluid builds up, the swelling continues. It usually occurs in the arm or leg, but can also be seen in the neck, face, or genitalia.

Who may be affected by lymphedema?
Lymphedema may affect anyone with a history of the following:

  • Cancer
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery
  • Infection
  • Trauma

What type of treatment is involved with lymphedema management?

  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Intermittent pneumatic compression pump
  • Multilayered bandaging
  • Compression garment fitting
  • Instructions on home management techniques and exercise instructions
