Lymphedema Lymphedema is swelling caused by slowed or blocked movement of fluid through the lymphatic system, which is an important part of your immune and circulatory systems. This blockage prevents the lymph fluid from draining well. As the fluid builds up, the swelling continues. It usually occurs in the arm or leg, but can also be seen in the neck, face, or genitalia.
