Tests Performed in our Sleep Center
Polysomnography or Overnight Sleep Study This test is an overnight test that measures your brain function, breathing, oxygen levels, heartbeat and limb movements during sleep. This study lasts for six and a half hours. You are still able to move where you need to during sleep without interference. This data is scored by a technologist and then reviewed and interpreted by a physician Board Certified in Sleep Medicine. Our pediatric patients who are being tested can bring one parent or guardian with and are given one on one care by our technicians. Multiple Sleep Latency Test -MSLT This is a daytime test that must follow a Polysomnography used to evaluate excessive daytime sleepiness. It consists of 3-5 naps scheduled 2 hours apart. The first nap begins 1½ -2 hours after you awaken. This test measures your sleep during the day focusing on how fast you fall asleep and how soon after sleep onset you go into REM. You will be dressed in your daytime clothes during this test. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for you during your test. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you must be compliant with your treatment ( i.e. CPAP) before an MSLT can be performed. Maintenance of Wakefulness Test-MWT This is a daytime test that must follow a Polysomnography to evaluate your level of alertness. An MWT consists of 4 scheduled naps each lasting 40 minutes throughout the day to see how alert you are. The naps” are scheduled 2 hours apart and begin 1 ½- 2 hours after awakening. It is different from and MSLT because you are asked to sit in a darkened room but to try to not go to sleep. You will not be allowed to stimulate alertness in anyway such as singing, pinching yourself or chewing gum. This test is used to evaluating those who operate over the road vehicles or who fly planes for a living.
Actigraphy This test uses a watch-like device that is worn for up to 2 weeks to monitor sleep patterns of the wearer. The watch can be worn for all activities of daily living including showering. A sleep diary is also kept during the time period the watch is being worn to correlate the activity of the watch and the person’s sleep patterns.
